Slovakia is full of romantic wedding settings that sit surprisingly close to Hungary: storybook castles modelled on the châteaux of the Loire, Renaissance fortresses, a castle towering over the Danube in Bratislava, the lakeside panorama of the High Tatras and the vineyards of the Little Carpathians. Here are seven places worth saying I do.
1. Bojnice Castle

Slovakia's most famous fairy-tale castle was rebuilt at the turn of the 20th century on medieval foundations, modelled on the French châteaux of the Loire Valley. Its spired silhouette, lake and gardens make it the country's most romantic landmark, and a frequent film location, so it is the classic choice for a storybook wedding.
2. Smolenice Castle

Set on the eastern slopes of the Little Carpathians, this neo-Gothic castle was rebuilt on the site of a 15th-century fortress, modelled on Burg Kreuzenstein near Vienna. Today it is a congress centre of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, sitting above forested hills with a tower and landscaped grounds that give weddings an exclusive, private feel.
3. Červený Kameň Castle

Rebuilt as a fortress in the 16th century and later a stately Pálffy family residence, Červený Kameň is now a well-preserved museum with grand decorated interiors and one of Europe's largest castle cellar systems. It is surrounded by the forests of the Little Carpathians wine country, ideal for couples who want a historic, noble setting.
4. Bratislava Castle
With its four corner towers rising above the Danube and the Old Town, Bratislava Castle is the defining silhouette of Slovakia's capital. Its baroque gardens and panorama make it the ideal anchor for a city wedding for couples who want Bratislava as their backdrop, with good transport and plenty of accommodation nearby.
5. Château Béla, southern Slovakia

This 18th-century baroque manor was restored into a five-star boutique hotel in 2008, near Štúrovo and the Hungarian border. The 28-hectare estate offers a French garden, a fountain, an on-site chapel and the Fresco Salon for ceremonies, while the Orangerie hall hosts receptions of up to about 140 guests, paired with the estate's own wines.
6. Štrbské Pleso, High Tatras

If you dream of a mountain wedding, the High Tatras lake of Štrbské Pleso sits at around 1,350 metres, with the Tatra peaks reflected in the water. Garden ceremonies by the lakeside hotel and panoramic ballrooms with mountain-and-lake views make for the country's most striking mountain-and-lake wedding setting.
7. Pezinok Castle, Little Carpathians

About 20 kilometres from Bratislava on the Little Carpathians wine route, this castle rebuilt on 13th-century foundations is now a hotel with its own winery, set in an English-style park. Flexible event halls, in-house gastronomy and an on-site winery make it the natural choice for a vineyard-themed wedding.
Practical notes
In Slovakia the civil marriage is performed by the registry office (matrika), and many castles arrange on-site ceremonies with the local office. As an international couple, allow time for document authentication and translation, so begin the paperwork early. Southern venues like Château Béla are an easy drive from Budapest, making them a good pick for a cross-border wedding too.
