Austria is one of Europe's great strongholds of the romantic-yet-elegant wedding: imperial baroque palaces, Sound of Music halls in Salzburg, emerald lakes, rows of vines along the Danube and alpine panoramas, all in one country. Whether you dream of a grand Vienna ceremony or a mountaintop vow, here are seven places worth saying I do.
1. Schönbrunn Orangerie, Vienna

One of the world's longest baroque orangeries sits in the gardens of Schönbrunn Palace, where Maria Theresa and Mozart once held court concerts. The festive rooms and foyer open onto a terrace in the Orangery garden, making it a setting for grand weddings of several hundred guests in the heart of imperial Vienna.
2. Mirabell Palace, Salzburg
The Marble Hall of Mirabell Palace is billed as one of the most beautiful and most-booked civil-wedding rooms in the world, clad in marble and gilded stucco, where Mozart once performed. The hall suits more intimate ceremonies of around 100 guests, while the Mirabell Gardens are an iconic Sound of Music filming location.
3. Schloss Leopoldskron, Salzburg

Built in 1736, this rococo palace sits beside its own lake with views of the Untersberg and Salzburg's fortress, and it was a primary exterior filming location for The Sound of Music. Today it runs as a hotel and event venue, so everything from a lakeside ceremony to a grand-room reception can be arranged in one place.
4. Hallstatt, Salzkammergut

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Hallstatt is one of the most photographed lakeside villages in the world: an emerald lake framed by the cliffs of the Dachstein. Ceremonies can be held on the lakeshore or even on a boat, and the lakeside hotels host terrace receptions. One caveat: the village is intensely touristed, so off-season timing is best for an intimate feel.
5. Schloss Hof, Lower Austria

Once the country residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, near the Slovak border, Schloss Hof comes with a roughly 50-hectare terraced baroque garden. The original palace chapel is still used for ceremonies, while the grand halls, riding hall and baroque stables provide several reception sites for a larger celebration.
6. Wachau Valley, Dürnstein

The UNESCO World Heritage terraced vineyards of the Wachau run along the Danube, with Dürnstein's blue baroque abbey tower and hilltop castle ruin behind. Summer vineyard ceremonies and nearby castle and abbey venues make for the classic Austrian wine-country wedding, paired with excellent white wine.
7. Hohe Mut Alm, Tyrol

If you dream of an alpine wedding, Hohe Mut Alm sits high in the Ötztal Alps and is reached by cable car. Couples can even ride a private wedding gondola up the mountain, and the glacier-and-peak panorama gives an unbeatable backdrop for a Tyrolean mountain ceremony.
Practical notes
In Austria the civil marriage is performed by the registry office (Standesamt), and many palaces and mountain venues work with the local office for an on-site ceremony. As an international couple, allow time for document authentication and translation, so start the paperwork well ahead. Book sought-after Salzburg and Vienna halls up to a year in advance.
